Forms of Compensation Exhibition

By Babak Radboy or Ayman Ramadan for Bidoun Projects and Townhouse Gallery
Art Dubai: March 16 — 20, 2010
Townhouse Gallery: March 23 — April 14, 2010

‘Forms of Compensation’ is a series of 21 reproductions of iconic modern and contemporary artworks, with an emphasis on sculptures, paintings and prints by Arab and Iranian artists. The series was produced in Cairo by craftspeople and auto mechanics in the neighborhood around Townhouse Gallery, commissioned by Babak Radboy and overseen by Ayman Ramadan, working from installation shots of the original artworks, along with the instruction that each copy should differ in one small way from its referent.

Despite their low-fi fabrication, the forgeries do not simply reinforce a critique of high culture or of globalised art production. The new works are surprising, often funny, uncanny and highly ambiguous: more clones than twins. The Cairo artists produced two of each artwork, shown concurrently at Art Dubai and Townhouse Gallery.

Babak Radboy is an artist living in New York City. He is Creative Director at Bidoun magazine.

Ayman Ramadan lives and works in Cairo. His practise spans from sculpture to photography, video and performance, often involving residents of downtown Cairo. Ramadan’s video Iftar has screened at Tate Modern, London, and the New Museum, New York, among other venues.
